Egypt Takes a Sustainable Leap with Inauguration of Largest Industrial Wastewater Treatment Unit
CAIRO – May 23, 2023: Engineer Tarek El-Molla, the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, officially launched the Abu Qir Fertilizers’ industrial wastewater treatment and reuse unit (ZLD), marking it as one of the largest facilities of its kind.
This initiative aligns with the global movement and Egypt’s national plan to promote sustainability and expand environmentally friendly projects.
Here are the key details:
- The unit stands as one of the largest industrial wastewater treatment plants.
- Industrial wastewater undergoes treatment and is repurposed for agricultural use.
- In addition to its environmental benefits, the unit contributes to the economy by providing the necessary chemicals for treating this volume of wastewater.
- A by-product called ammonium sulfate is generated through the process. This by-product finds application in agriculture, where it is combined with organic fertilizers during winter service or the cultivation of new crops. It aids in the decomposition of organic fertilizers, accelerating the process.
During the inauguration, Minister Tarek El-Molla directed the initiation of procedures for establishing a second industrial wastewater treatment unit. This decision was based on the economic savings, notable environmental impact, and sustainability achieved through compatibility projects for industrial entities.
