Illegal mining of rare earth by ammonium sulphate detected in Malaysia

Seri Menanti, Kuala Pilah, Malaysia – Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun has revealed the detection of a suspected illegal mining operation involving rare earth elements in two lots located in Kampung Sikai, near here. The discovery came to light after a complaint was lodged with the Kuala Pilah District and Land Office on May 16, prompting a comprehensive investigation by relevant authorities.

According to Aminuddin, the illegal mining activity employed an in-situ leaching process, which utilized chemical methods and did not require extensive land use. He explained that the process involved drilling holes and directing liquid chemicals, specifically ammonium sulfate, to extract rare earth elements from the ground, subsequently channeling them to a catchment pond.

To curtail further mining activities and encroachment, the affected areas have been sealed off. Aminuddin emphasized that the state Department of Director General of Lands and Mines, in collaboration with other relevant agencies, is conducting an investigation. They suspect that the illegal mining was carried out on a large scale, and concerted enforcement actions will be taken against the perpetrators.

Highlighting the seriousness of the issue, the state government vows to ensure that appropriate measures are implemented based on existing laws against those involved. Aminuddin called upon all parties to report any suspicious activities related to illegal mining to the authorities, emphasizing the significance of curbing revenue losses for the state.
